Dartmouth to Brixham
This stretch of the South West Coast Path takes you on a journey along the beautiful South Devon coastline, from the bustling naval town of Dartmouth to the charming fishing town of Brixham. This is an undulating walk that rewards you with breath-taking views of the coast, lush woodland paths, and the chance to spot wildlife such as seals and dolphins.

Starting Point: Dartmouth
Begin your adventure in the historic town of Dartmouth, with its narrow streets, half-timbered houses, and the stunning Dartmouth Castle. You might want to check out the Dartmouth Museum or the Britannia Royal Naval College before you set off. From the town centre, follow signs for the South West Coast Path which will lead you out of town and onto the trail.
Milestone: Stoke Fleming (3 miles from Dartmouth)
Leaving Dartmouth, the path takes you through rolling farmland and woodland before arriving at the village of Stoke Fleming. This quaint village offers spectacular views over Start Bay. Stoke Fleming also has a popular local pub, The Green Dragon, if you're in need of a quick refreshment.
Facilities: Public toilets are available in Stoke Fleming, and there’s also a village shop and a café.
Milestone: Blackpool Sands (5 miles from Dartmouth)
From Stoke Fleming, the path descends through a wooded valley and leads you to the stunning Blackpool Sands. Despite its name, this is a pebble beach, but it is one of the most beautiful in the South Hams with crystal clear waters. Take a moment to relax and take in the scenery before you continue your journey.
Facilities: There’s a café at Blackpool Sands, as well as toilets and a shop.
Milestone: Strete (7 miles from Dartmouth)
Continuing on from Blackpool Sands, the path climbs steeply to the village of Strete. Here, you can enjoy panoramic views over Start Bay. Strete also offers a great opportunity to see some local wildlife, with kestrels, buzzards, and gulls spotted frequently.
Facilities: There’s a pub in Strete, as well as a village shop and post office. There are also public toilets near the car park.
Milestone: Scabbacombe Sands (9 miles from Dartmouth)
Leaving Strete, the path descends through woodland before opening out onto the secluded Scabbacombe Sands. This is a great spot for a quiet picnic and perhaps a dip in the sea if the weather is fine.
Facilities: There are no facilities at Scabbacombe Sands, so plan ahead.
Final Stretch: Arrival in Brixham (11.5 miles)
The trail from Scabbacombe Sands takes you over Berry Head, a limestone headland with a nature reserve and an ancient fort, before descending into the vibrant town of Brixham. Known for its fishing, Brixham has a bustling harbour and is a great place to end your walk with a fresh seafood meal.
Facilities: Brixham has plenty of amenities, including cafes, pubs, public toilets, and shops.
Points to Remember
Terrain: This section includes both woodland paths and exposed cliff-top trails, with several steep ascents and descents. Sturdy walking boots are recommended.
Facilities: Facilities are limited between Dartmouth and Brixham, so carry water, snacks, and any essentials you may need.
Weather: South Devon’s weather can be unpredictable, with coastal fog common. Pack layers and a waterproof jacket.
Seasonal Refreshments: Cafes and pubs are available in the villages along the route, but it’s always a good idea to carry your own food and drink.
