Salcombe to Torcross

Prepare to be awed by the stunning natural beauty and rich history that this section of the South West Coast Path has to offer. Starting in the delightful sailing town of Salcombe, the path will take you through sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, peaceful estuaries, and the eerie remains of a destroyed village, before reaching the tranquil shores of Torcross.

Starting Point: Salcombe
Your journey begins in Salcombe, a charming town known for its sailing and crab fishing. Make sure to take some time to explore the town, with its vibrant waterfront filled with boats and yachts, and perhaps grab a bite at one of the local seafood restaurants. The path starts at the northern end of the town, near the ferry crossing.

Note: Salcombe gets quite busy during the summer months, so plan your visit accordingly.

South Sands Beach (2 miles from Salcombe)
The path leads you westward along the estuary and out to the coast, offering great views over the mouth of the Kingsbridge Estuary. Soon, you will arrive at South Sands Beach, a lovely sandy beach perfect for a quick break and a dip in the water if the weather allows it.

Facilities: There is a cafe and toilets at South Sands Beach.

Prawle Point (6 miles from Salcombe)
The trail takes a wilder turn as it heads towards Prawle Point, the southernmost tip of Devon. Here, you will find a fantastic mix of rugged cliffs, secluded coves, and expansive sea views. Look out for the Coast Watch station, which is usually open to visitors.

Facilities: There are no facilities at Prawle Point, so carry everything you need.

Start Point (9 miles from Salcombe)
As you continue along the path, you will pass the iconic Start Point Lighthouse, standing guard over one of the most hazardous stretches of coast in the UK. You can take a guided tour of the lighthouse, or simply enjoy the panoramic views from the outside.

Facilities: There is a small seasonal cafe at the lighthouse.

Final Stretch: Hallsands and Arrival in Torcross (12 miles)
The final stretch of the journey will take you past the ghostly remains of Hallsands, a fishing village that was destroyed by a storm in 1917. It's a haunting reminder of the power of the sea, but also a peaceful spot to stop and reflect. From there, it's just a short walk to Torcross, a quiet village nestled at the edge of Slapton Ley Nature Reserve.

Facilities: Torcross has a few pubs and cafes, as well as public toilets.

Terrain: This section includes a mix of sandy beaches, rugged cliffs, and woodland paths, with some steep ascents and descents. Good walking boots are recommended.
