Boscastle to Tintagel: A Walk Through Legends

This section of the South West Coast Path takes you on a journey through some of the most mythical landscapes in Cornwall. Starting from the charming harbour village of Boscastle, the path winds its way along dramatic cliffs, through lush valleys and ends at the legendary Tintagel, the supposed birthplace of King Arthur.

Starting Point: Boscastle

The walk begins in the village of Boscastle, with its picturesque harbour and quaint stone cottages. Take a moment to explore the village before setting out on the path, perhaps visiting the Witchcraft Museum for an insight into the area's folklore. The path begins at the harbour, heading west along the coast.

Penally Hill (1 mile from Boscastle)

As you leave Boscastle, the path climbs steeply up Penally Hill. The effort is rewarded with stunning views back over Boscastle and out to sea. This is a great spot for a breather and a photo opportunity.

Facilities: None on Penally Hill – Boscastle is the last place for supplies until Tintagel.

Beeny Cliff and Pentargon Waterfall (3 miles from Boscastle)

Continuing along the path, you'll come to Beeny Cliff, a rugged stretch of coastline famed for its association with the poet Thomas Hardy. A little further on, you'll discover the dramatic Pentargon Waterfall, which plunges 120ft into the sea. This is a great spot for a picnic, with the sound of the cascading water adding to the atmosphere.

Facilities: None – remember to pack a picnic and plenty of water.

Fire Beacon Hill and Rocky Valley (6 miles from Boscastle)

The path continues to Fire Beacon Hill, where you'll find an ancient burial mound and fantastic views across to Lundy Island. From here, the path descends into the magical Rocky Valley, with its rushing stream, lush woodland and ancient rock carvings. There's a sense of stepping back in time as you make your way through the valley.

Facilities: None directly on the path – ensure you are well stocked with supplies.

Final Stretch: Bossiney and Tintagel (9 miles)

Leaving Rocky Valley, the path climbs again, bringing you to the sandy cove of Bossiney Haven, a perfect spot for a rest and maybe even a swim. From here, it's a short walk to the legendary Tintagel, with its imposing castle, said to be the birthplace of King Arthur. Once you've explored the castle, reward yourself with some well-earned refreshments in one of Tintagel's cafes or pubs.

Facilities: Tintagel has a good range of amenities, including cafes, pubs, public toilets, and shops.

Points to Remember

Terrain: This section has many steep ascents and descents, so good walking boots are essential.

Facilities: Limited between Boscastle and Tintagel, so carry water and snacks.

Weather: Coastal weather can change quickly – bring layers and a waterproof jacket.

Seasonal Refreshments: Available near Rocky Valley and Bossiney in summer months.
