Bude to Crackington Haven: A Walk Through Time and Tide

This stretch of the South West Coast Path is undeniably one of Cornwall’s most spectacular, yet demanding coastal walks. Starting from the delightful seaside town of Bude, the path takes walkers along dramatic cliffs, secluded coves, and ancient woodland, ending at the peaceful village of Crackington Haven.

Starting Point: Bude

Begin your journey in Bude, a popular seaside resort known for its sandy beaches and excellent surfing conditions. Take some time to explore the town before you start your walk, perhaps visiting the Bude Castle or the Bude Sea Pool. Your journey officially starts from Bude's Tourist Information Centre and heads south along the coastal path.

Note: Bude has plenty of shops and cafes where you can stock up on supplies before your walk.

Widemouth Bay (3 miles from Bude)

The trail starts with a gentle walk along the clifftops and soon brings you to Widemouth Bay, a long, sandy beach that’s popular with families and surfers. This is a great spot for a quick rest and a paddle if the weather permits.

Facilities: Public toilets, car park, and a cafe are available at Widemouth Bay.

Millook Haven (5 miles from Bude)

The path becomes more challenging as you leave Widemouth Bay and head towards Millook Haven. The impressive cliff formations here are a geologist’s dream, showcasing the power of ancient geological forces. The descent into Millook Haven is steep, but the peaceful pebble beach at the bottom makes it worthwhile.

Facilities: No facilities at Millook Haven – make sure you have everything you need.

Cleave (7 miles from Bude)

The path now ascends again, winding its way through woodlands and along the edges of fields before arriving at the hamlet of Cleave. This is a good spot to stop and catch your breath while enjoying the stunning views over the Atlantic Ocean.

Facilities: No facilities at Cleave.

Crackington Haven (10.5 miles from Bude)

The final stretch of the walk takes you through more woodland before descending into Crackington Haven, a small, sheltered bay surrounded by majestic cliffs. Celebrate the end of your journey with a well-deserved rest at the local pub or cafe.

Facilities: Public toilets, car park, a pub, and a cafe are available in Crackington Haven.

  • Terrain: This section has many steep ascents and descents, so good walking boots are essential.
  • Facilities: Limited between Bude and Crackington Haven, so carry water and snacks.
  • Weather: Coastal weather can change quickly – bring layers and a waterproof jacket.
  • Seasonal Refreshments: Available in Bude and Crackington Haven, but not along the trail.
