Westward Ho! to Clovelly
This section of the South West Coast Path is a rewarding journey that showcases the rugged beauty of North Devon's coastline. Starting from the vibrant seaside town of Westward Ho!, you'll traverse through undulating cliff-tops, serene beaches, and ancient woodlands before arriving at the picture-perfect village of Clovelly.
Distance: 11 miles (17.7 km)
Difficulty: Moderate to Challenging
Starting Point: Westward Ho!
Begin your journey in Westward Ho!, the only place in the UK with an exclamation in its name! This lively seaside resort, named after Charles Kingsley's novel, boasts a broad sandy beach that stretches for miles. After soaking in the sights and sounds, start your journey by heading east along the South West Coast Path.
Milestone: Abbotsham Cliffs (2 miles from Westward Ho!)
The first leg of the journey takes you across the flat landscape of Northam Burrows Country Park before climbing to the heights of Abbotsham Cliffs. Enjoy the panoramic views over Bideford Bay and, on a clear day, the Welsh coast in the distance.
Milestone: Greencliff (4 miles from Westward Ho!)
Next, head towards Greencliff. This wild, rocky shore is a haven for wildlife, including seals basking on the rocks. The twisted, folded rock formations tell a tale of ancient geological upheaval.
Milestone: Peppercombe Beach (6 miles from Westward Ho!)
Leaving Greencliff, you'll journey through ancient woodlands before arriving at Peppercombe Beach. This tranquil spot, with its red sandstone cliffs, provides a colourful contrast to the grey slate common on this coast. If the tide is out, it's a lovely spot for a rest.
Milestone: Buck's Mills (8 miles from Westward Ho!)
Continuing along the trail, you'll arrive at the quiet village of Buck's Mills, where time seems to stand still. The small beach here is often deserted, making it a great spot for a break.
Final Stretch: Clovelly (11 miles from Westward Ho!)
The final stretch of your journey takes you through woodlands and along rugged cliffs to Clovelly. This uniquely preserved village, with its cobbled streets and whitewashed cottages, appears to be frozen in time. As you reach the top of the village, reward yourself with a well-deserved rest and maybe a treat from one of the local shops.
